Our story

One day I was travelling with my family. As we often do on long drives, we were playing things to listen to, and I asked my wife to put on the Quran with the English or Urdu translation. She found one on YouTube and played it.

But my ten-year-old daughter could not follow it. The translation was word-for-word, in old-fashioned English, full of difficult words. Take Surah An-Nas, or Surah Al-Kawthar, or verse 4 of Surah Al-Falaq — unless you already know the background, they simply don't make sense to a child. My daughter turned to me and said, “Dad, I don't know what this is about. I can't understand it.” She lost interest, and asked me to turn it off.

Here is exactly what I mean. When Surah Al-Falaq is read word-for-word, a child hears: “…and from the evil of the witches, who blow on knots.” What is a young child supposed to make of that? Or Surah Al-Kawthar: “Indeed We have given you abundance.” — the word “abundance” means nothing to a little one, and no one tells them what Al-Kawthar even is. Or the hidden whisper of Surah An-Nas: “from the evil of the sneaky whisperer.” — with no explanation of what that whisper is, or where it comes from. Every word is correct — but for a child, they are locked doors with no key. The Easy Explanation is that key.

That moment stayed with me. I realised there was a real need for an easy explanation — and I promised myself that one day I would write one. Something that actually makes sense. It would add a few words for context where needed, but it would be aimed at a 4–8 year old: so simple that anyone could understand it. Not word-for-word, but a clear explanation of what each ayah is really about.

So the Quran should speak to us. For children, it should feel like a story — something that draws them in, rather than a translation so heavy that they lose interest and only return to it much later in life, if they are fortunate enough, or if their parents kept the Quran and its meaning close.

When a child listens, the Quran should feel like a warm, gentle friend sitting beside them and telling them a story — not a hard lesson they are being tested on. It should make them lean in, ask questions, and feel close to Allah, the same way a loving bedtime story makes a child feel safe and cared for. A child should want to hear the next ayah, the way they beg for one more page of a favourite storybook. If they grow up feeling that the Quran is a beautiful book that speaks to them — kind, simple, and full of meaning — that love will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

I believe this app, and the easy explanation in it, are made for exactly this — and I hope, with all my heart, that it will help millions of children around the world. It carries both translations: the exact translation, the kind we usually have, and the easy explanation, for children — and for anyone who wishes the Quran to feel like a storybook they never want to switch off. You can listen to either, any time.

ایک دن میں اپنی فیملی کے ساتھ سفر پر تھا۔ جیسے لمبے سفر میں اکثر ہوتا ہے، ہم سننے کے لیے مختلف چیزیں چلا رہے تھے، اور میں نے اپنی بیوی سے کہا کہ قرآن انگریزی یا اردو ترجمے کے ساتھ لگا دو۔ اُس نے یوٹیوب سے ایک ترجمہ ڈھونڈ کر چلا دیا۔

لیکن میری دس سالہ بیٹی اُسے سمجھ نہ سکی۔ ترجمہ لفظ بہ لفظ تھا، پرانی طرز کی زبان میں، مشکل الفاظ سے بھرا ہوا۔ سورہ الناس لے لیں، یا سورہ الکوثر، یا سورہ الفلق کی چوتھی آیت — جب تک آپ کو پس منظر معلوم نہ ہو، یہ ایک بچے کے لیے سمجھنا بہت مشکل ہیں۔ میری بیٹی نے میری طرف دیکھ کر کہا، ”ابو، مجھے سمجھ نہیں آ رہا کہ یہ کس بارے میں ہے۔ میں اِسے سمجھ نہیں پا رہی۔“ اُس کی دلچسپی ختم ہو گئی، اور اُس نے مجھ سے اِسے بند کرنے کو کہا۔

میرا مطلب بالکل یہ ہے۔ جب سورہ الفلق کا لفظ بہ لفظ ترجمہ سنایا جاتا ہے تو بچہ سنتا ہے: ”…اور گرہوں میں پھونک مارنے والیوں کی بُرائی سے۔“ ایک چھوٹا بچہ اِس سے کیا سمجھے؟ یا سورہ الکوثر: ”بے شک ہم نے تمہیں کوثر عطا کی۔“ — لفظ ’کوثر‘ ایک چھوٹے بچے کے لیے کوئی معنی نہیں رکھتا، اور کوئی اُسے یہ بھی نہیں بتاتا کہ کوثر ہے کیا۔ یا سورہ الناس کا چھپا ہوا وسوسہ: ”چپکے سے وسوسہ ڈالنے والے کی بُرائی سے۔“ — بغیر یہ سمجھائے کہ وہ وسوسہ کیا ہے اور کہاں سے آتا ہے۔ ہر لفظ درست ہے — لیکن بچے کے لیے یہ ایسے بند دروازے ہیں جن کی کوئی چابی نہیں۔ آسان مفہوم وہی چابی ہے۔

وہ لمحہ میرے دل میں رہ گیا۔ مجھے احساس ہوا کہ ایک آسان مفہوم کی واقعی ضرورت ہے — اور میں نے خود سے وعدہ کیا کہ ایک دن میں ایسا مفہوم لکھوں گا۔ ایسا جو واقعی سمجھ میں آئے۔ جہاں ضرورت ہو وہاں سمجھانے کے لیے چند الفاظ کا اضافہ ہو، لیکن اِس کا ہدف 4 سے 8 سال کا بچہ ہو: اِتنا آسان کہ کوئی بھی سمجھ سکے۔ لفظ بہ لفظ نہیں، بلکہ اِس بات کی صاف وضاحت کہ ہر آیت اصل میں کس بارے میں ہے۔

تو قرآن ہم سے بات کرنا چاہیے۔ بچوں کے لیے اِسے ایک کہانی کی طرح محسوس ہونا چاہیے — ایسی چیز جو اُنہیں اپنی طرف کھینچے، نہ کہ ایسا بھاری ترجمہ کہ اُن کی دلچسپی ختم ہو جائے اور وہ زندگی میں بہت بعد میں اِس کی طرف لوٹیں، اگر خوش قسمت ہوں، یا اگر اُن کے والدین نے قرآن اور اُس کے مطلب کو قریب رکھا ہو۔

جب کوئی بچہ سنتا ہے تو قرآن اُسے ایک نرم اور مہربان دوست کی طرح محسوس ہونا چاہیے جو اُس کے پاس بیٹھ کر اُسے کہانی سنا رہا ہو — نہ کہ کوئی مشکل سبق جس کا اُس سے امتحان لیا جا رہا ہو۔ اِسے بچے کو اپنی طرف کھینچنا چاہیے، اُس کے دل میں سوال جگانا چاہیے، اور اُسے اللہ کے قریب کرنا چاہیے — بالکل ویسے جیسے ایک پیاری کہانی بچے کو محفوظ اور پیارا محسوس کراتی ہے۔ بچے کو اگلی آیت سننے کا دل چاہنا چاہیے، جیسے وہ اپنی پسندیدہ کہانی کی کتاب کا ایک اور صفحہ سننے کی ضد کرتا ہے۔ اگر بچہ اِس احساس کے ساتھ بڑا ہو کہ قرآن ایک خوبصورت کتاب ہے جو اُس سے بات کرتی ہے — مہربان، آسان، اور معنی سے بھری — تو یہ محبت ساری زندگی اُس کے ساتھ رہے گی۔

مجھے یقین ہے کہ یہ ایپ، اور اِس میں موجود آسان مفہوم، بالکل اِسی مقصد کے لیے ہیں — اور میں دل کی گہرائیوں سے اُمید کرتا ہوں کہ یہ دنیا بھر کے لاکھوں بچوں کے کام آئے گی۔ اِس میں دونوں ترجمے موجود ہیں: لفظ بہ لفظ ترجمہ، جو عام طور پر ہمارے پاس ہوتا ہے، اور آسان مفہوم، بچوں کے لیے — اور ہر اُس شخص کے لیے جو چاہتا ہے کہ قرآن ایک ایسی کہانی کی کتاب لگے جسے وہ کبھی بند نہ کرنا چاہے۔ آپ جب چاہیں، دونوں میں سے کوئی بھی سن سکتے ہیں۔
